This is a creature concept for Creature of the Week 205 over at ConceptArt.org.
Glow Jaws are large insects that burrow into overhanging surfaces, such as fallen trees or mud caves. They have tentacle-like appendages that glow brightly. On the tentacles are scented lures that attract prey such as small rodents. Their legs are broad, shaped like flower petals found in the habitat, they can tightly enclose around prey. The legs are also great for burrowing, and can serve as a shield from predators. However, the Glow Jaw is very vulnerable when it is not in a burrow.
Can anyone think of a better name for this creature?
Great idea, and what great colours! I love that purple/neon-green combo.
At full res it's obvious how it's constructed, but at low res the structure of the top (where the green feelers issue out of the plant) is hard to discern. I don't know how you would solve that (or even if it's important)... maybe strengthening the green light reflecting off the plant? But that might look overdone at full res and potentially muddy the colours...
So maybe leaving it as is, is the best course. OK I talked myself into it.
Very awesome. No crits on this one, it just looks sweet. Maybe i'll have to do an entry for this contest too, looks like fun. I dunno if i said thanks for the last crit u left over on my page, so thanks for that, much appreciated. Keep it up!
Awesome creature design! I love how the bioluminescence is actually practical and feasible. I also really like how you added the different stages and character notes on the bottom, it makes the creature feel more real. Beautiful coloring too, as always. Good luck in the CoW, I'm sure you'll do well.
