The first of a series of personal characters.

Scale cloak inspired by this cool thing: www.etsy.com/listing/62506426/…

Just as an exercise, here were some my goals with this character design:
To create a costume that appeared both functional and somewhat memorable. It's really easy to over-design fantasy costumes, to the point where they're no longer practical. I aim for something an actor could wear in a realistic setting.
◘Use soft lighting. Slightly cool primary in the foreground, with a warm secondary kick light.
◘Stay loose with the brushwork wherever possible.

This is really wonderful, it feels different than normal fantasy characters with the color and armor.

A very cool and simple approach.
I like the idea of scale armor being fairly thin and light (like mithril) rather than big, chunky plates (like the dragon scale armor in Skyrim)

I guess the trick would be crafting it ;) I can't imagine it's very easy to find a dragon, kill it, skin it, haul away the goods, find an armorer who knows how to make it, then put all the pieces back together. Sheesh! No wonder it's so expensive.

i think if you were to do a more detailed design, you should give her some sort of personal object like a ring/armlet or pendant.

I really appreciate that you included your goals in the description. It makes it fun for me to go back to the image and see how you met those goals and figured out the problem-solving :) And I love the textures of the scale cloak! It's so unique!

I saw someone else say that the character "lacked something iconic", so I looked at it again, and I kind of agree... but I think it's just the color palette. Everything seems to blend together, color-wise. If there were something red (or red-ish), like a sash, or hair ribbon, or something, it would add some color contrast that might make it more iconic. But I also really like her the way she is!

I've commented on the sword before, and I almost feel like it is iconic.  I often seen his picture and think about her unusual sword.  I wonder if it has a story instead of being a result of her inexperience as some have commented.  Maybe it or its hilt means something special to her.  I just don't know, but I do feel like it is an iconic item for her.

It's a matter of opinion :) The sword didn't really catch my eye as much as the green colors around her chest and shoulders, so (to me) that didn't feel particularly "iconic." I think it's unique for sure! But it's not as memorable as the rest of her design in my opinion.

Yeah, it seems I fell short of that goal.  And I agree, something unexpected and notable, like a contrasting color would help.  I'll try to apply that to the next character I'm working on.

Thanks for your thoughts!

It could also just be the background, since it kind of matches her, so she doesn't stand out. I think just some tiny tweaking would make her very, very iconic :)

I'm looking forward to the rest of this series!

Good to see the thought process on this -I like to see on what things other artists are focusing while creating the artwork. Great that You can be inspired by one cloth piece and do whole design based on that. Maybe You can think about some background story for the character also, and then design the whole thing? :) I think it's the thing that makes the character 'alive'. Right now I think her back story is like that - little badass, orphan girl, taught to be on her own in tough world. She will guide You through the dangers of the jungle :)

I usually think of a story while I'm painting a character, which is kind of backwards. This one I still don't have anything though.  I guess I was being lead on more by a visual idea rather than a narrative one. Your story works for me :)

"It's really easy to over-design fantasy costumes, "
Oh ye-e-eah, thats the huge problem in all fantasy franchise over the last few years..  I guess it happens because character designers of late want to show off their "mad skillz", instead of thinking..  And we get something like this bnetcmsus-a.akamaihd.net/cms/c…

I'll admit that there are certain situations in which a lot of exaggeration can work well. In games, especially where you have to show progression through armor and weapons being one.  Still, being the westerner that I am, I have little tolerance for the grossly impractical style like you linked.  And even that example is fairly tame compared to others that I've seen.

Yeah, that's just something I quickly googled up. :)
The overexaggerated designs do have some charm though, if you treat them like an image, an excercise in detail, not like a real thing.
But, sometimes, less is more, as it's been correctly pointed out

Too much influence from JRPGs, anime, and manga lead to those sort of images.

Love this.  I love this so much.   She has a very interesting design, practical, but still very distinctive with the scale cloak!  Wonder what kind of beastie she had to slay to get that.   I love how she isn't a glorified woman warrior but some humble looking girl who can very likely take care of herself.    The colors are beautiful too.
Very nicely done!

:D thank ya!

Yeah I think she's still a fledgling.  And that just gave me an idea! It would be fun to depict a future version of this character, like say when she's about 10 years older. A decade of wandering around a harsh world is bound to have some interesting effects.  I might try that idea on some other characters as well.

Looks good. :) And her costume does indeed look far more practical than most fantasy adventurers.  One little quibble bothers me, though... the hilt on her short sword is rather too long.  Two-handed hilts were found on large longswords, where the extra leverage was put to good use, but in a short sword you actually shorten your reach by using two hands.  It is almost like her sword was originally a long hand-and-a-half sword that was broken and she decided, "What the hell, I'll just have it made into a new sword," XD Then again maybe that could fit in with her character... she looks rather inexperienced.

Oh wow!   I absolutely love the colors.  Her outfit design, while practical, remains very appealing, so great work on that.   Her face doesn't have a lot of distinctive detail, yet somehow you made her seem wistful and thoughtful; a very reserved sort of hero.   Very lovely design!

So obviously I couldn't leave it uncommented on, and cooked up a second.
Ah well.  It's well worth two comments!  XD

Mind if I add her to my book of art for random NPC's? I like to keep art handy for seemingly meaningless minions. Tends to keep my players guessing as to whether they will end up meeting them again.

Though in the case of one totally meaningless, soul purpose was cannon fodder, no actual stats I just rolled 5d for all his actions (3 attribute 2 skill),[this was for shadowrun 4e mind you] I had this one minion that managed to fend off the entire party, put all but one in the hospital, and still managed to get away without a single scratch.

Mind you, this guy was a joe blow, who was on a mind trip. He was the puppet of a cabal of magicians who had him a small group of other people from the neighborhood all under their spell. The players, while trying to take down the magicians got ambushed by a pack of minions. One, who was standing on the roof of a tin wearhouse, totally exposed managed to pin down the party with machine gun fire, then when they finally had opportunity to return fire, couldn't hit him for nothing. After he had all but killed everyone in the party, our BuRT (Bullet Resistant Troll, a borderline cyberzombie mind you) just opened up on the building itself, figuring if I can't manage to hit him, I'll take out the building he's on. Cause the structure to collapse, but some how, buy luck of the dice, the now infamous "Joe Dirt" NPC minion had managed to survive the demolition of the building he was standing on, and managed to shake his mind free of the enchantment, and ran away.

The players demanded states on him so they could hire him for the next run. So he's relatively mediocre character save for his one maxed out, everything pumped into it, 8 Edge (which is as high as you could possibly have). He's got an attribute of 3 in everything else, at least two skill ranks in just about every skill. So there's not much he can't do, given the right equipment, and with a little bit of lick, which he has in spades, he'll get the job done in no time at all.

I love the personal signature you gave to this painting, really makes it a personal character. But maybe like ArcZephyer said; it might need something more iconic. Maybe give her some rim light, I think that might be enough to make the character really pop. Nonetheless, I love this piece and the colors you used!

I really like this.  She looks like she's off on her first adventure and is wistfully looking back at her old home wondering if she'll ever see it or the people there again.  My only criticism would be the sword's blade looks too short to require two hands.

Dang dude well done, ! If I were to say one thing it would be that the design is just slightly lacking, I think it looks great it just lacks something iconic that would make you remember this character if she was an actor in a movie. I hope I'm not overstepping since it's a personal piece, your work is awesome so I just want to see it get better :) If it were me I would push the shoes, they look so cool already!
