Not sure if this is a naive question to ask...
But could one do most of this with just a few or to one brush?

Yes, you certainly could. A variety of brushes only make it easier/faster to render different materials and surfaces. You could do all of that with a basic round brush if you wanted.

It's been a long time, but I think this image was done mostly with the standard "chalk" brush in Photoshop.

Nice, well thank you for replying.
I think I will give it a try for my landscape study.
I am attending a Art school now as an Illustrator, and soon to graduated in the spring. I feel I need to stay in school so much longer, as I am barely learning any concept type of computer art work now.

Thanks again, I'll try to restrain from asking too many questions. lol

you have a nice stroke and a keen eye for layout and detail if you feel like putting some in,
your bgs have a very real feel to them, I like them a lot better than your creature work - might be
because I'm just not that into creatures in general, but let me put it that way: your landscapes feel like
they exist (no matter how futuristic or obviously fantasy style) where your creatures mostly feel like you
played around..

Beautiful.
Reminds me of James Gurney's works. :D
