Your paintings are what I invision when I start to paint digitally, but by the end my work ends up way too tight. I blame the precise inking and watercolour I've been doing for the past few years.

Thank you for such inspirational work.

That's an interesting observation.

One way to loosen up is to think more about the play of light and shadow within your scenes.  Where light hits a surface, it will bring out clear detail and sharp edges.  Where light does not reach, shadow obscures detail and softens edge definition.   Often when we say that work feels "loose" or expressive, it is because it has this natural balance of detail and obscurity (light and shadow).  If you find that your works of usually too tight, it may be that you are not utilizing light and shadow enough.

I just took a gander at your gallery.  You have some great works. I especially like your Warriors of Virtue series.
I took the liberty of doing a quick and messy paintover of this one with the wizard.  Seen here:

My aim was simply to enhance the lighting that you already started.  Much of what I did, was to remove detail that would not be revealed by the light, such as the side and back of the wizard's head.

You wouldn't have to light the scene as I did.  You can modify the intensity to best serve the story that you are telling.  That is one of the great things about light and color. You can modify it endlessly, without changing the subject.

If you'd like an excellent course on light and color, check out Nathan Fowkes'  Schoolism class:…
I think it would be great for you, and take your work to a whole new level!

Wow, thanks! 😊 If you are anything like me as an artist, you are probably crazy busy, so I really appreciate the time you took with the paint over. Other artists suggested a more dramatic play of light and shadow, too.

I'm definitely planning on taking Fowke's class. I finished Pictorial Composition (it made sense to me that knowing how to arrange a picture will be the first step, but apparently that's the last step), and though I've signed up for Schoolism to learn lighting, I ralise I need to learn some basic digital painting first, so I'm currently working through Chiu's class.

I'm so use to acrylic and watercolour that I find it baffling when digital tools do not behave as I want them to. If I try to be sketchy, I feel there is not enough information, then I end up overworking a section, then I continue to work on the rest, by the end it is always overworked. 😑 I'll experiment with your suggestion on the third cover. I'll have to let the first two go or I will never get the project done.

Thanks again. Hug

(What program are you using for the digital art, by the way?)
