Even with a great start on a painting, I will eventually reach an "ugly stage" about half way through the process. It can be very frustrating but I find that if I just keep on working at it, things will come together.
...and then some times it's just going to be ugly.
I feel like that, I get started on a project and the WIP is really getting me excited because of how its turning out and then somehow it goes to poop afterwards. xD I see some artists just complete things without any redos or ugly moments, as if they are making it to be recorded like a movie arrg I'm so envious!
This doesn't happen to Greg Manchess. I think the rest of us have to suffer through it, unfortunately.
One of the great ah-ha moments I had was realising that the midway-done-ugly phase is just part of the process. I don't know how many canvases I scraped down before then.
Glad to hear it happens to others... well, not *glad*, but you know what I mean.
Haha! This is definitely true!! When I just begin the first washings (kind of "under-washings") in a watercolor. There is no contrast, no texture, the light is ugly, it looks like an old children drawing... Clearly, finish before thinking!
Yeah, I remember having a conversation about this in my painting class. There's always that time during a painting where it just looks horrible and just being able to move past that and keep adding more layers of color to bring out the end product. The problem with a lot of beginning painters is that they get stuck on the "ugly" phase and give up. The great thing about painting is that you can paint over it, digital or traditional.
Something similar happens when I'm writing something fictional, only it doesn't normally happen halfway through, more like right after the first paragraph.
Yep, happens to me a lot. I only start liking it when the last few things are adding in. Those extra light effects or colour adjustments can contribute a lot right near the end
