I once thought that you should "paint what you know". Each artist has a unique background from which we can draw from. This is a sure way to create art with authentic detail and intimacy. In theory this is great and sometimes true, but more often than not it leads to boring and uninspired work. To simply paint what you know, is far too limiting!
Now I am of the opinion that you should create the art that you would like to see. The real thrill is in exploring these new horizons, and blazing your own trail. For me, this is vital to the enjoyment of being an artist. Allow your art to surprise you, and let inspiration be your guide.

Journey Through Europe: Recap
I have returned!
Some of you may recall my previous journal where I was searching for a travel buddy to tour Europe with. In doing so I made a great new friend, and can now report that the trip itself was incredible!
It was also pretty exhausting, because within just a month's time, I visited London, Paris, Switzerland, Venice, Florence, and Rome. We used the super speedy trains to zip from one place to another, which was a great way to see the changing landscape.

Schoolism Kickstarter
One of the best online art schools is getting even better. With the success of their new Kickstarter project, Schoolism will soon start a monthly subscription plan for somewhere between $20-10, depending on how much is raised. (This is a great deal when you consider that their courses usually start at $400-500 each!)
I've really enjoyed and have gained a lot Nathan Fowkes's courses, and looking forward to more. If you're serious about becoming a professional artist, I highly recommend you take advantage of Schoolism and other online resources, like New Masters Academy, that are now available. I completely agree. I'm in a bit of rut at the moment where i'm just drawing so much "safe-zone" stuff, and it just makes everything look same and boring. There will always be a point where you just have to take a step back and try / learn something new, otherwise you end up going circles.
